Cannon Newell’s goal and two assists along with Jonathan Flores’ two goals led Virginia Peninsula to a 6-2 win over Mid-Atlantic Christian and the first New South Athletic Conference men’s soccer title Sunday night in Williamsburg, Virginia.
The Mustangs kept it close through the first half, trailing 1-0 at the intermission, but the Gators began to pull away early in the second half with a pair of goals at 41 minutes and 38 minutes.
Newell was named the game’s most valuable player.
The NSAC’s first season of men’s soccer will conclude Sunday when Virginia Peninsula takes on Mid-Atlantic Christian at Wanner Stadium in Williamsburg, Virginia.
The Gators topped the Mustangs 9-2 early in the season, but the maturing Herd is looking to even that score and take home the trophy this weekend.
“Mighty oaks from little acorns grow,” said NSAC commissioner Mike Davis. “These two fledgling programs represent just the beginning of the sport for our conference. As we continue to expand our membership and add sports, we’re eager to see how it will grow.”
First kick is set for 6:00 pm.
