Builders Open Home Schedule With 68-50 Win Over CCCC

NEWPORT NEWS – After starting the season with seven straight road games, the Apprentice School women’s basketball team knocked off Central Carolina, 68-50, Saturday afternoon.

The Builders led wire-to-wire, jumping out to a 9-1 lead over the first five minutes. After the Cougars cut the lead down to five early in the second quarter, Apprentice pushed the lead out to 17 points at 34-17 and maintained a sizable margin going into halftime.

Central Carolina didn’t go away quietly, trimming the lead to as few as 17 after trailing by as many as 27 in the second half.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Two Builders finished with double-doubles, including a 15-point, 20-rebound outing from Jada Bryant off the bench. Amaya Ray ended with 14 points and 13 boards and also had six assists and six steals. Nyla Jackson led Apprentice with 18 points.
  • The Builders pulled down 27 offensive rebounds and converted them into 16 second chance points.
  • The win marked the first home opening win for the women’s basketball program in exactly three years when they took down Regent in the home opener on December 10, 2019.

NEXT UP

Apprentice will next take the floor in 2023 as they will be at Virginia-Lynchburg on January 10.

Builders Fall at Johnson & Wales

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Apprentice School women’s basketball team dropped a road game Sunday at Johnson & Wales, 88-64.

The Wildcats led wire-to-wire, but the Builders, ranked ninth in USCAA Division 1, were able to hang with the seventh-ranked team in USCAA Division 2. Apprentice (2-5 overall, 0-1 NSAC) trailed by five points after the first, 11 at halftime and 16 after three quarters before JWU pulled away in the fourth.

  • Three Builders finished in double figures, led by Amaya Ray‘s 20 points. Jada Bryant added 15, while Nyla Jackson had 12.
  • Johnson & Wales made 13 three pointers on the day.

Apprentice will be at home for the first time this season on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Central Carolina.

Apprentice Falls at Livingstone

SALISBURY, N.C. – A third quarter scoring drought was the big difference as The Apprentice School women’s basketball team fell Saturday at Livingstone, 70-42.

Livingstone led 10-6 after the first quarter and the Builders kept the game at a four-point margin at the half. In the third quarter, Livingstone outscored Apprentice 27-7 to stretch the lead out before finishing the game in the fourth with a 16-12 advantage.

  • Jada Bryant led the Builders with 17 points, shooting 7-for-14 from the floor.
  • Livingstone had 21 offensive rebounds, converting those to 16 second chance points.

Conference Opener Pits Centurions, Builders on Sunday

The first season of New South Athletic Conference women’s basketball officially tips off Sunday when Carolina Christian hosts Apprentice in Winston-Salem, NC.

The Centurions (2-1) are looking to bounce back from a tough road loss to Clinton while the Builders (1-1) are completing a back-to-back trek through North Carolina fresh off Saturday’s 83-37 win at Central Carolina.

Game time is set for 12:00 noon.

Builders Roll Past Cougars for Collins’ First Win

SANFORD, N.C. – A 17-0 run in the first quarter set the tone as the Apprentice School women’s basketball team took down Central Carolina Saturday, 83-37.

After Central Carolina hit two free throws in the first 20 seconds, the Builders rattled off 17 straight points over the next seven minutes to jump out to a lead that they would never relinquish. Apprentice (1-1) led 24-9 after the first quarter and 50-18 at halftime.

Coach Courtney Collins’ team didn’t waver in the second half, adding five points to the lead by the end of the third quarter before notching up the lead by nine more by the final horn.

The Builders are back in action tomorrow at Carolina Christian with tipoff set for noon. It is the conference opener for both teams.
