DBCU Opens Season with 95-79 Win at SECC

LEESBURG, Fl. – Daytona Beach Christian wing John Smith poured in 33 points to lead the Seraphim to a 95-79 win at Southeast Christian Wednesday night. It was the first countable game in the season for either team and the first win for DBCU’s Brad Fraser as a college head coach.

The Eagles took the early lead by as many as four points, but Daytona’s defense cranked up, forcing several 10-second and shot clock violation turnovers, and took the lead with about 13 minutes left in the first half. DBCU would continue to pull away and increase the lead to double digits before Southeast staged a comeback in the last five minutes of the half, closing the halftime gap to one, 40-39.

But in the second half, the Eagles could not retake the lead as the Seraphim full-court pressure kept the Southeast offense out of sync.

“Our full-court pressure caused them trouble,” said Fraser. “(SECC point guard) Coy Sizemore was really good in the first half, but we were able to slow him down some in the second half.”

Southeast Christian Coach Dwayne Walker was frustrated following the loss. “Time to turn that page and get us all on the right one. Just need to put a full 40 minutes together and we could be the team I envisioned for this season. The 41st minute is still my favorite one, though. You know, the one minute I get to share Jesus with both teams and coaches.”

Isaac Broxey added 22 for the Serpahim.

Southeast junior Karlton Walton led the Eagles with 23 points including going 10-of-11 from the free throw line. Sizemore added 20.

Daytona Beach travels to Evansville, Indiana for an exhibition game against NJCAA ninth-ranked Vincennes on Saturday. Southeast Christian will next be in action October 28 at crosstown rival Beacon College in the 2026 NSAC Men’s Basketball Tipoff Classic.
